This colourless liquid is the simplest organic nitrile (hydrogen cyanide is a simpler nitrile, but the cyanide anion is not classed as organic). It is produced mainly as a byproduct of acrylonitrile manufacture.
Acetonitrile is widely used as a polar aprotic solvent in organic synthesis and in the purification of butadiene in refineries. Not only is it miscible with water and with many other organic solvents, but it also has a lower viscosity and produces less pressure in the column than other solvents such as Methanol. The inherent low absorbance of Acetonitrile (especially HPLC grade) makes it the preferred solvent for the mobile phase of HPLC due to the reduction in the amount of noise during UV detection. Overall, Acetonitrile has many unique properties as an organic mobile phase that often result in better chromatographic peaks.
