Adipophilin, also called Perilipin 2, ADRP (Adipose differentiation related protein), and PLIN2, belongs to the perilipin family, members of which coat intracellular lipid storage droplets. This protein is associated with the lipid globule surface membrane material and maybe involved in development and maintenance of adipose tissue. It is not restricted to adipocytes as previously thought, but is found in a wide range of cultured cell lines, including fibroblasts, endothelial and epithelial cells, and tissues, such as lactating mammary gland, adrenal cortex, Sertoli and Leydig cells, and hepatocytes in alcoholic liver cirrhosis, suggesting that it may serve as a marker of lipid accumulation in diverse cell types and diseases.

They are classified as erythropoietic or hepatic, depending on whether the enzyme deficiency occurs in red blood cells or in the liver. AHP is characterized by attacks of gastrointestinal disturbances, abdominal colic, paralysis, and peripheral neuropathy. Most attacks are precipitated by drugs, alcohol, caloric deprivation, infections, or endocrine factors.

It is one of the components responsible for the antifungal activity in Melaleuca alternifolia (tea tree) essential oil.[1] The reaction rate constant of α-terpineol with the OH radical and ozone was found to be (1.9±0.5)×10-10cm3 molecule-1s-1 and (3.0±0.2)×10-16cm3 molecule-1s-1, respectively.Application:α-Terpineol has been used as a reference standard for the identification of α-terpineol in tequila by solid phase microextraction (SPME) and capillary gas chromatography−mass spectrometry (GC-MS), and in virgin olive oil samples by headspace SPME followed by GC-MS equipped with flame ionization detector (FID).It may be used as a reference standard for the analysis of α-terpineol as trace volatile compound in wine by solid-phase extraction (SPE) followed by GC-MS and in essential oils and related compounds from aromatic plants by SPME and GC-MS.α-Terpineol may be used in the synthesis of α-terpinyl esters of acetic acid and acetic anhydride via lipase-mediated esterification.

A group of proteins that are intimately involved in this process are the serine/threonine (Ser/Thr) protein kinases. ANKK1 (ankyrin repeat and kinase domain containing 1), also known as PKK2 or SGK288, is a 765 amino acid protein that belongs to the Ser/Thr protein kinase family and contains 12 ANK repeats and one protein kinase domain. Highly expressed in brain tissue and present in lower amounts in placenta and spinal cord, ANKK1 functions to catalyze the ATP-dependent phosphorylation of target proteins and is thought to play a role in alcohol and nicotine dependence. The gene encoding ANKK1 maps to human chromosome 11, which houses over 1,400 genes and comprises nearly 4% of the human genome.
