1g dissolves in 0.9 mL water; 0.3 mL boiling water, 7.2 mL absolute alcohol, 4.2 mL methanol; insoluble in glycerol. The dissolution of sodium hydroxide in water is a highly exothermic reaction. Glass containers should be avoided in the preparation and storage of sodium hydroxide solutions because it will etch the glass (typically anything over 2 N will etch glass).
