Calcein, orange powder
Calcein
Calcein is an indicator for the determination of calcium by titration with EDTA. The excitation wavelength and emission wavelength are 495/515 nm.
It is suitable for fluorometric determination of calcium. It does not fluoresce in strong alkaline solution, but an intense fluorescence appears in the presence of alkaline earths, especially calcium. The yellow green fluorescence disappears instantly with an addition of EDTA. Also in acidic solution, the yellow green fluorescence of Calcein disappears with an addition of copper, zinc and mercury.
Calcein is used to determine the integrity and stability of free and sol-gel entrapped liposomes as well as to measure LLO pore formation, by entrapment inside the lumen of the liposomes. To study ultrasound induced drug uptake by the use of a fluorescent reporter molecule . To quantify the cellular uptake of low molecular weight fluorescent molecules due to transient enhancements of membrane permeability .
Practically insoluble in water, easily soluble in alkaline solutions to give an orange red solution.
