Spectinomycin is an aminocyclitol antibiotic, closely related to the aminoglycosides, it inhibits protein synthesis (elongation) by interfering with peptidyl tRNA translocation. Mutation in rpsE (the gene for ribosomal protein S5) prevents binding of spectinomycin.
