Description:
The protein encoded by this gene binds copper and zinc ions and is one of two isozymes responsible for destroying free superoxide radicals in the body. The encoded isozyme is a soluble cytoplasmic protein, acting as a homodimer to convert naturally-occuring but harmful superoxide radicals to molecular oxygen and hydrogen peroxide. The other isozyme is a mitochondrial protein. Mutations in this gene have been implicated as causes of familial amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Rare transcript variants have been reported for this gene. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2008]

Description:
Glutathione peroxidase (GPx) enzymes are generally selenium-containing tetrameric glycoproteins that help prevent lipid peroxidation of cell membranes. GPx enzymes reduce lipid hydroperoxides to alcohols, and reduce free hydrogen peroxide to water. GPx members are among the few proteins known in higher vertebrates to contain selenocysteine, which occurs at the active site of glutathione peroxidase and is coded by the nonsense (stop) codon TGA. There are eight GPx homologs (GPx-1–8). GPx-1 plays an important role in the antioxidant defense of the vascular wall and neural cells in response to oxidative stress. GPx-2 is the major isoform in the lungs and its basal or inducible expression is dependent on Nrf2. GPx-3 is under regulation by hypoxic stress and the expression and deficiency of GPx-3 is associated with cardiovascular disease and stroke. GPx-5 is selenium-independent; it is bound to the acrosome of sperm, where it may protect sperm from premature acrosome reaction in the epididymis.

Description:
Repair polymerase that plays a key role in base-excision repair. Has 5'-deoxyribose-5-phosphate lyase (dRP lyase) activity that removes the 5' sugar phosphate and also acts as a DNA polymerase that adds one nucleotide to the 3' end of the arising single-nucleotide gap. Conducts 'gap-filling' DNA synthesis in a stepwise distributive fashion rather than in a processive fashion as for other DNA polymerases.

Description:
Voltage-gated proton (hydrogen) channels play an important role in cellular defense against acidic stress. NOX1 is a homolog of the catalytic subunit of the superoxide-generating NADPH oxidase of phagocytes, gp91phox. Three splice variants of NOX1 have been identified, NOH-1L, NOH-1S and NOH-1Lv. NOH-1S is a voltage-gated proton channel that participates in the regulation of cellular pH and is blocked by zinc. NOH-1L is a pyridine nucleotide-dependent oxidoreductase that generates superoxide and might conduct H(+) ions as part of its electron transport mechanism, whereas NOH-1S does not contain an electron transport chain. NOX1 have the potential to be effective treatments for a range of ischemic diseases.

Description:
Sphingomyelin synthases synthesize the sphingolipid, sphingomyelin, through transfer of the phosphatidyl head group, phosphatidylcholine, on to the primary hydroxyl of ceramide. The reaction is bidirectional depending on the respective levels of the sphingolipid and ceramide. Golgi apparatus SMS1 directly and specifically recognizes the choline head group on the substrate, requiring two fatty chains on the choline-P donor molecule in order to be recognized efficiently as a substrate. Major form in macrophages. Required for cell growth in certain cell types such as HeLa cells. Suppresses BAX-mediated apoptosis and also prevents cell death in response to stimuli such as hydrogen peroxide, osmotic stress, elevated temperature and exogenously supplied sphingolipids. May protect against cell death by reversing the stress-inducible increase in levels of proapoptotic ceramide.

Anti-Glycerol Kinase antibody recognizes the phosphotransferase enzyme glycerol kinase. Glycerol kinase catalyzes the formation of glycerol phosphate by transferring a phosphate from ATP to glycerol. Dihydroxyactone and L-glycerladehyde can also act as acceptors in place of glycerol.
Anti-Glycerol Kinase is ideal for investigators interested in Cancer, Metabolism, and Kinase/Phosphatase enzymology.

Description:
SPTLC2 is a long chain base subunit of serine palmitoyltransferase. Serine palmitoyltransferase, which consists of two different subunits, is the key enzyme in sphingolipid biosynthesis. It catalyzes the pyridoxal-5-prime-phosphate-dependent condensation of L-serine and palmitoyl-CoA to 3-oxosphinganine.
