Description:
Beta-defensins (also designated BD, and hBD in human) are small cationic peptides with broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity. Produced in mucosal epithelia and neutrophils of several species, Beta-defensins are developmentally regulated. Human b-defensin 2 is locally regulated by inflammation and is the first member of the b-defensin family that is locally inducible by inflammation. The murine homolog of human b-defensin 2, which is called b-defensin 3, is present in the respiratory system and in low levels in the epithelial cells of the intestine and lung. The unique murine b-defensin 2 (Defb2) is not expressed in airways of untreated mice, but is upregulated in the airways by lipopolysaccharide and may contribute to host defense at the mucosal surface of the airways.

Description:
Nuclear factor kappa B (NFkB) is a ubiquitous transcription factor and an essential mediator of gene expression during activation of immune and inflammatory responses. NFkB mediates the expression of a great variety of genes in response to extracellular stimuli including IL1, TNF alpha, and bacterial product LPS. NFkB is associated with IkB proteins in the cell cytoplasm, which inhibit NFkB activity. IKK is a serine protein kinase, and the IKK complex contains alpha and beta subunits (IKK alpha and IKK beta). IKK alpha and IKK beta interact with each other and both are essential for NFkB activation. IKK alpha specifically phosphorylates IkBa. IKKa is expressed in variety of human tissues.

Description:
Guanine nucleotide-binding proteins (G proteins) are involved as a modulator or transducer in various transmembrane signaling systems. The beta and gamma chains are required for the GTPase activity, for replacement of GDP by GTP, and for G protein-effector interaction. G gamma4 interacts with beta-1 and beta-2, but not with beta-3. It is expressed in brain, kidney, pancreas, skeletal muscle and faintly in cardiac muscle.

Description:
Glucose-6-phosphatase (G6Pase), is a multicomponent enzyme system that hydrolyzes glucose-6-phosphate (G6P) in the final step of gluconeogenesis and gluconeolysis. G6Pase localizes to the endoplasmic reticulum, and while liver, kidney, and intestine are the only tissues that express the first identified isoform, G6Pase-Alpha, a second form, designated G6Pase-Beta, contributes to blood glucose homeostasis in a wider range of tissues. G6Pase-Beta, also known as SCN4, UGRP or G6PC3 (glucose 6 phosphatase, catalytic, 3), is a 346 amino acid endoplasmic reticulum multi-pass membrane protein that is involved in carbohydrate biosynthesis and the gluconeogenesis pathway. Inhibited by vanadate, G6Pase-Beta hydrolyzes GP6 to glucose in the endoplasmic reticulum. Due to its necessary involvement in normal glucose metabolism, G6Pase-Beta may play an integral role in diabetes and glycogen storage diseases (GSDs).

Description:
Defensins form a family of microbicidal and cytotoxic peptides made by neutrophils. Members of the defensin family are highly similar in protein sequence. This gene encodes defensin, beta 1, an antimicrobial peptide implicated in the resistance of epithelial surfaces to microbial colonization. This gene maps in close proximity to defensin family member, defensin, alpha 1 and has been implicated in the pathogenesis of cystic fibrosis. The mature form of Beta defensin 1 is 36 amino acids.
