Osteoprotegerin (OPG, or osteoclastogenesis inhibitory factor) is a secretory glycoprotein belonging to TNF receptor superfamily. Acts as decoy receptor for RANKL and thereby neutralizes its function in osteoclastogenesis. Inhibits the activation of osteoclasts and promotes osteoclast apoptosis. Bone homeostasis seems to depend on the local RANKL/OPG ratio. May also play a role in preventing arterial calcification. May act as decoy receptor for TRAIL and protect against apoptosis. TRAIL binding blocks the inhibition of osteoclastogenesis. OPG acts as a soluble factor in the regulation of bone mass and may be beneficial in the treatment of osteoporosis with increased osteoclast activity. OPG consists of 401 amino acids with a molecular weight of 44 kDa as a monomer and 90 kDa as a disulphide-linked dimer.

TERF2, as a component of the telomere nucleoprotein complex, is present at telomeres in metaphase of the cell cycle. TERF2 is a second negative regulator of telomere length and binds as a dimer to TTAGGG repeats at ends of chromosomes (telomeres), where it blocks inappropriate activation of the ATM/p53 pathway. RENBP contains a leucine zipper domain, which is essential for its dimerization with renin. RENBP can catalyze the interconversion of N-acetylglucosamine to N-acetylmannosamine, indicating that it is a GlcNAc 2-epimerase. Sequences of porcine, human and rat renin-binding proteins are highly homologous. The RENBP gene is conserved in dog, mouse, rat and zebrafish, and maps to human chromosome Xq28 between DXS52 and G6PD. beta-1-fetoprotein. beta-fetoprotein is a major plasma protein produced by the yolk sac and the liver during fetal life. beta-fetoprotein expression in adults is often associated with hepatoma or teratoma. However, hereditary persistance of beta-fetoprotein may also be found in individuals with no obvious pathology. The protein is thought to be the fetal counterpart of serum albumin, and the beta-fetoprotein and albumin genes are present in tandem in the same transcriptional orientation on chromosome 4. beta-fetoprotein is found in monomeric as well as dimeric and trimeric forms, and binds copper, nickel, fatty acids and bilirubin. The level of beta-fetoprotein in amniotic fluid is used to measure renal loss of protein to screen for spina bifida and anencephaly.
