The mitochondrial enzyme encoded by this gene catalyzes synthesis of carbamoyl phosphate from ammonia and bicarbonate. This reaction is the first committed step of the urea cycle, which is important in the removal of excess urea from cells. The encoded protein may also represent a core mitochondrial nucleoid protein. Three transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been found for this gene. The shortest isoform may not be localized to the mitochondrion. Mutations in this gene have been associated with carbamoyl phosphate synthetase deficiency, susceptibility to persistent pulmonary hypertension, and susceptibility to venoocclusive disease after bone marrow transplantation.[provided by RefSeq, May 2010].

The Ryanodine Receptor (RyR) is the channel responsible for calcium release from muscle cell Sarcoplasmic Reticulum (SR) and also plays a role in calcium regulation in non-muscle cells. The RyR exists as a homotetramer and is predicted to have a short cytoplasmic C-terminus and 4-10 transmembrane domains. The remainder of the protein, termed the "foot" region, is located in the cytoplasm between the transverse tubule and the SR. Mammalian RyR isoforms are the product of three different genes: RyR-1 is expressed predominantly in skeletal muscle and areas of the brain; RyR-2 is expressed predominantly in heart muscle but also found in the stomach, endothelial cells and diffuse areas of the brain; and RyR-3 is found in smooth muscle and the brain (striatum, thalamus and hippocampus). In non-mammalian vertebrates, the RyR isoforms are termed alpha, beta and cardiac which correlate loosely to the mammalian RyR-1, RyR-3 and RyR-2 isoforms respectively.

Adrenergic receptors mediate the hormone and neurotransmitter functions of adrenaline and noradrenaline. In contrast, the three α2 family receptor subtypes (α2a, 2b, 2c) signal via Gi/o alpha subunits to inhibit adenylyl cyclase activity, increase potassium transport, inhibit calcium conductance, and stimulate phospholipase A2. α1b adrenergic receptor mRNA expression in human tissues is highest in the spleen, kidney, and fetal brain. Calpain, and m calpain, also known as Calpain 2, are intracellular, calcium dependent cysteine proteases. Mu calpain has a micromolar sensitivity (thus the mu) as compared to the millimolar calcium sensitivity of m calpain. Both Calpains 1 and 2 are composed of an 80 kD subunit and a 30 kD subunit. Whereas the 30 kDa subunit is shared by both enzymes, the larger catalytic subunits are different and exhibit the distinct Ca++ requirements that are suggested by their names. The calpains have papain like activity, thus the pain nomenclature. Both Calpain 1 and Calpain 2 are ubiquitously expressed, and are countered by the endogenous calpain inhibitor, calpastatin. Other calpain family members (calpain 94, ncl2, ncl3, etc) have more limited tissue distribution, and perhaps different functions. The calpain family members consist of a common small subunit (Calpain 4), and a large variable subunit. It is not clear that all calpains contain a small subunit. Domains in the large subunit include the amino terminal domain I, the proteinase domain II, domain III, and the EF hand domain IV. The calpains appear to serve multiple physiological roles, and ideas concerning the functions of these enzymes are in a state of rapid flux.
