Description:
Hexokinases phosphorylate glucose to produce glucose-6-phosphate, thus committing glucose to the glycolytic pathway. HK2 (hexokinase 2) is the predominant form found in skeletal muscle. It localizes to the outer membrane of mitochondria. Expression of this protein is insulin-responsive, and studies in rat suggest that it is involved in the increased rate of glycolysis seen in rapidly growing cancer cells. Description:
In plant cells, the vacuole functions as a major calcium store. Although a calmodulin-regulated Ca2+-ATPase (ACA4) is known to be present in prevacuolar compartments, the presence of an ACA-type Ca2+-ATPase in the mature vacuole of a plant cell has not been verified. Here we provide evidence that ACA11 localizes to the vacuole membrane. ACA11 tagged with GFP was expressed in stable transgenic plants, and visualized in root cells and protoplasts by confocal microscopy. A Ca2+-ATPase function for ACA11 was confirmed by complementation of yeast mutants.

Description:
Protein kinases are enzymes that transfer a phosphate group from a phosphate donor onto an acceptor amino acid in a substrate protein. By this basic mechanism, protein kinases mediate most of the signal transduction in eukaryotic cells, regulating cellular metabolism, transcription, cell cycle progression, cytoskeletal rearrangement and cell movement, apoptosis, and differentiation. The protein kinase family is one of the largest families of proteins in eukaryotes, classified in 8 major groups based on sequence comparison of their tyrosine (PTK) or serine/threonine (STK) kinase catalytic domains. Epidermal Growth factor receptor (EGFR) is the prototype member of the type 1 receptor tyrosine kinases. EGFR overexpression in tumors indicates poor prognosis and is observed in tumors of the head and neck, brain, bladder, stomach, breast, lung, endometrium, cervix, vulva, ovary, esophagus, stomach and in squamous cell carcinoma.

Description:
Serine palmitoyltransferase, which consists of two different subunits, is the key enzyme in sphingolipid biosynthesis. It converts L-serine and palmitoyl-CoA to 3-oxosphinganine with pyridoxal 5'-phosphate as a cofactor. SPTLC1 is the long chain base subunit 1 of serine palmitoyltransferase. Mutations in SPTLC1 gene were identified in patients with hereditary sensory neuropathy type 1.Serine palmitoyltransferase, which consists of two different subunits, is the key enzyme in sphingolipid biosynthesis.
