Description:   The Drosophila atonal gene produces a protein with basic helix loop helix (bHLH) domains that plays an essential role in the development of the Drosophila nervous system. Mammalian atonal homolog 2 (MATH-2) is a helix-loop-helix (HLH) transcription factor that is structurally homologous to the product of Drosophila atonal gene. MATH-2 is a 337 amino acid protein with an atonal-related basic HLH domain. In mice, expression of MATH-2 takes place by embryonic day 11.5 and initially localizes to the wall of brain vesicles and in the spinal cord. It is expressed in the cortical plate and the mantle layer in the developing central nervous system, and is limited to the nervous system in adults. Adult mouse cerebrums produce a high level of MATH-2 RNA with lower levels in other neuronal tissues. Research studies suggest that MATH-2 may function as a trans-acting factor involved in the development and maintenance of the mammalian nervous system.

Description:   This gene is specifically expressed in a subpopulation of neuroendocrine cells, and is upregulated by nerve growth factor. The structural organization of this gene is similar to that of the rat gene, and both the translated and the untranslated regions show a high degree of sequence similarity to the rat gene. The encoded secretory protein also shares similarities with the secretogranin/chromogranin family, however, its exact function is not known. Nerve growth factor (NGF) is a peptide that plays a key role in the differentiation and survival of neurons in the peripheral nervous system (PNS) and the central nervous system (CNS). VGF is a peptide synthesized and secreted by neurons and is upregulated by NGF in the PC12 cell line. VGF is widely expressed in both the PNS and CNS, but is especially abundant in the adult hypothalamus. VGF plays an essential role in how the brain regulates energy expenditure and body weight. Its expression is rapidly induced by injury, the circadian clock, and neuronal activity.

Description:   NF-1, also designated CTF, consists of a family of CCAAT box binding proteins that stimulate DNA replication and activate transcription. Analysis of human NF-1 messenger RNA has revealed two forms of the NF-1 protein arising from an alternate splicing of a single NF-1 gene. NF-1 binds its consensus DNA element as a homodimer via an amino-terminal DNA binding domain, and activates transcription through a putatively novel, proline-rich, carboxy terminal transactivation domain. The NF-1 protein has been shown to recognize and bind the adenovirus type 2 promoter and activate transcription of herpes simplex virus thymidine kinase genes. Description:   BAF53b is a member of a family of actin-related proteins (ARPs), which shares significant sequence identity with conventional actins. Both actins and ARPs comprise an actin fold, which forms an ATP binding cleft. BAF53b is a component of the BAF (BRG/brm-associated factor) complex in mammals, which is functionally related to the SWI/SNF complex in S. cerevisiae and Drosophila, and is associated with chromatin remodelling to facilitate transcriptional activation. As neural progenitors exit the cell cycle, the highly homologous BAF53a subunit of the BAF complex is replaced by BAF53b. This subunit switch is essential for the transition from from neural stem cells / progenitors to postmitotic neurons. BAF53b also plays a role in dendritic outgrowth, during which it is required to recruit the BAF complex and the dendritic regulator CREST to specific gene promoters. This function can not be performed by BAF53a.
