The human Mel-CAM gene maps to chromosome 11q23 and encodes a trans-membrane glycoprotein, also designated MCAM, MUC18 or CD146, that belongs to the immunoglobulin superfamily and functions as a Ca2+-independent cell adhesion molecule. Common component of cell membranes, often as phosphatidyl conjugates. Is a potent (IC50=1-3 µM) and selective inhibitor of protein kinase C. Inhibition is competitive with diacylglycerol, phorbol dibutyrate and Ca2+ and it also inhibits PKC activation by other lipids.
