Description:
Students investigate the inheritance of the ability to taste sodium benzoate by constructing a pedigree of the ability of members of their family to taste them. Includes: 1 vial sodium benzoate, 1 vial control papers (100 papers per vial), and a family pedigree chart. *Test Paper Factoid: Taste papers can be used to demonstrate inheritance. The ability to taste PTC is a hereditary trait. 7 out of 10 people will taste it. Sodium Benzoate tastes sweet, salty, bitter or will be tasteless to different people. Thiourea tastes bitter to most but is tasteless to some!

Description:
Transmembrane receptor Patched regulates several developmental processes in both invertebrates and vertebrates. In higher vertebrates the patched (Ptc) also acts as a tumor suppressor. The patched receptor signaling involves negatively regulating a GPCR, smoothened. The binding Hedgehog ligand to Ptc removes the negative interaction of Ptc, and allows the signaling by smoothened. It has been shown that during head morphogenesis in D. melanogaster, Ptc positively interacts with smoothened, which leads to stimulation of Activin type 1 receptor Baboon, and activation of cell proliferation in the eye antennal disc. The expression of activated Baboon in the Ptc domain in Ptc mutant background completely abolish the head developmental defects.

Description:
The sense of taste is essential for the survival of organisms. For example, the ability to identify sweet-tasting foods enables animals to seek out food with high nutritive value, whereas the ability to identify bitter substances enables them to avoid the ingestion of potentially harmful substances. A family of integral membrane proteins are involved in taste perception and include T1R, which is involved in sweet taste perception and T2R, which is involved in bitter taste perception. Both types of taste receptors couple to various G proteins to initiate signal transduction cascades. Specifically, T2R38 is expressed in subsets of taste receptor cells of the tongue and exclusively in gustducin-positive cells. Variations in T2R38 are associated with the ability to taste the bitter chemical phenylthiocarbamide (PTC), also called thiourea tasting.
