Description:
Mipu1, also known as zinc finger protein 667 or ZNF667, encodes a nuclear-localized protein containing 14 carboxy-terminal zinc finger motifs and an amino-terminal KRAB domain. This protein is highly expressed in heart and brain and is upregulated in rat heart after a transient ischemia-reperfusion procedure. Overexpression experiments suggest that Mipu1 suppresses the transcriptional activities of AP-1 and SRE in the MAPK signaling pathway and thus may play a role in the pathogenesis of cardiac and vascular disease. At least four isoforms of MIPU1 are known to exist.

Description:
RORET, also known as RING finger protein 15 (RNF15) or zinc finger protein RoRet, is a 465 amino acid member of the TRIM family, also known as the RING-B-box coiled-coil (RBCC) family. Members of the RBCC family have an N-terminal RING finger, followed by one or two zinc-binding domains (B-box domains), a leucine coiled-coil region and a variable C-terminal domain. Found in all eukaryotes, members of the RBCC family typically function within a larger protein complex and possess ubiquitin-protein isopeptide ligase activity. The protein encoded by this gene is a member of the tripartite motif (TRIM) family. The TRIM motif includes three zinc-binding domains, a RING, a B-box type 1 and a B-box type 2, and a coiled-coil region. The function of this protein has not been identified.

Description:
Zinc-finger proteins contain DNA-binding domains and have a wide variety of functions, most of which encompass some form of transcriptional activation or repression. The majority of zinc-finger proteins contain a Krüppel-type DNA binding domain and a KRAB domain, which is thought to interact with KAP1, thereby recruiting histone modifying protein. ZBTB44 is a 570 amino acid member of the Krüppel C2H2-type zinc-finger protein family. Localized to the nucleus, ZBTB44 contains a BTB domain, also known as a POZ domain, which inhibits DNA binding and mediates homotypic and heterotypic dimerization. Characteristics of the BTB domain suggest that ZBTB44 functions as a transcription regulator. Four isoforms of ZBTB44 have been identified.

Description:
Zinc is an essential cofactor that is involved in cell growth and development, as well as in protein, nucleic acid and lipid metabolism. The transport of zinc across the cell membrane is crucial for correct enzyme and overall cell function. SLC39A11 (solute carrier family 39 (metal ion transporter), member 11), also known as ZIP11 (Zrt- and Irt-like protein 11), is a 342 amino acid multi-pass membrane protein belonging to the ZIP transporter family. Expressed as multiple alternatively spliced isoforms, SLC39A11 acts as a zinc-influx transporter and is encoded by a gene located on human chromosome 17, which comprises over 2.5% of the human genome and encodes over 1,200 genes, some of which are involved in tumor suppression and in the pathogenesis of Li-Fraumeni syndrome, early onset breast cancer and a predisposition to cancers of the ovary, colon, prostate gland and fallopian tubes.

Description:
TRIM36 (tripartite motif-containing 36), also known as RNF98 (RING finger protein 98), HAPRIN (haploid germ cell-specific RBCC protein) or RBCC728, is a 728 amino acid protein that belongs to the TRIM/RBCC (Ring finger, B box, coiled-coil) family. Predominantly expressed in prostate, testis and brain with weak expression in heart, kidney and lung, TRIM36 contains two B box-type zinc fingers, a SPRY domain, a coiled-coil domain, a fibronectin type-III domain and a RING-type zinc finger; a motif that has zinc-chelating activity and is involved in mediating protein-protein and protein-DNA interactions. Localizing to the cytoplasm and the acrosomal region of germ cells and mature sperm, TRIM36 is believed to play a role in the acrosome reaction and fertilization. In addition, TRIM36 is overexpressed in prostate cancer, suggesting a possible role for TRIM36 in prostate tumorigenesis.

Description:
The RING-type zinc finger motif is present in a number of viral and eukaryotic proteins and is made of a conserved cysteine-rich domain that is able to bind two zinc atoms. Proteins that contain this conserved domain are generally involved in the ubiquitination pathway of protein degradation. RNF17 (ring finger protein 17) or tudor domain-containing protein 4, TDRD4, SPATA23, Mmip-2 or FLJ11045, is a testis-specific protein and and novel key regulator of spermiogenesis containing 1,623 amino acids. By distributing Mad proteins to the cytoplasm, RNF17 regulates the transcriptional activity of c-Myc. Although showing localization in the nucleus, RNF17 is predominantly observed in cytoplasm and is a component of a novel nuage found in male germ cells. The gene encoding RNF17 maps to human chromosome 13q12.12 and encodes one RING-type zinc finger and four tudor domains. As a result of alternative splice events, five RNF17 isoforms exisit.

The majority of zinc-finger proteins contain a Kr_ppel-type DNA binding domain and a KRAB domain, which is thought to interact with KAP1, thereby recruiting histone modifying proteins. HIC-2 (hypermethylated in cancer 2) possesses zinc finger motifs that are thought to be important for DNA-binding and also has a BTB/POZ domain at the N-terminus, which is thought to be important for protein-protein binding, as well as for the binding of transcription factors. HIC-2 is also known as Hic-3, HIC1-related gene on chromosome 22 or Zinc finger and BTB domain-containing protein 30, and is a 615 amino acid protein that is expressed as two isoforms produced by alternative splicing. HIC-2 is highly expressed in cerebellum and is localized to the nucleus in cells. HIC-2 contains a short amino acid sequence that is thought to interact with CtBP, a transcriptional repressor. The gene sequence associated with HIC-2 is thought to be a target for miRNAs (microRNAs) which are expressed in many cancers, suggesting that HIC-2 could possess tumor suppressor capabilities.
