Galectin-14 is a member of the Galectin family of carbohydrate binding proteins. The members of Galectin family contain one or two carbohydrate recognition domains, which can bind beta -Galactoside. LGALS14 is expressed intracellularly in placenta and eosinophils, and is released by eosinophils following allergen stimulation. LGALS14 may be involved in the development of allergic inflammation. Two alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding distinct isoforms have been observed.

COLEC11 is a 271 amino acid C-type lectin protein that contains a collagen-like domain and a carbohydrate recognition domain, and plays an important role in host-defense. COLEC11 binds to various sugars and LPS (lipopolysaccharides), which include fucose but does not bind to glucose, hnRNP, Beta-1,3-Gal-T3 or mannose. COLEC11 is ubiquitously expressed in most tissues with high expression in kidney, liver, fetal liver, small intestine, thymus, spinal cord, placenta, adrenal gland, pancreas and several cell lines. COLEC11 is a secreted protein and all alternatively spliced isoforms of COLEC11 have oligomeric structures created through disulfide bonding.

The Galectin family of proteins, with specificity for Nacetyllactosamine containing glycoproteins, consists of beta-galactoside binding lectins containing homologous carbohydrate recognition domains (CRDs).They also possess hemagglutination activity, which is attributable to their bivalent carbohydrate binding properties. Galectins are active both intracellularly and extracellularly.
