This gene encodes a member of the hydratase/isomerase superfamily. The protein encoded is a key mitochondrial enzyme involved in beta-oxidation of unsaturated fatty acids. It catalyzes the transformation of 3-cis and 3-trans-enoyl-CoA esters arising during the stepwise degradation of cis-, mono-, and polyunsaturated fatty acids to the 2-trans-enoyl-CoA intermediates. In human liver cytosolic fractions, four forms of biliverdin reductase have been identified, including two biliverdin-IX Beta reductases and two biliverdin-IX Alpha reductases, designated isozymes I and II and isozymes III and IV, respectively. Biliverdin reductase A (BLVRA), also designated biliverdin-IX Alpha-reductase, belongs to the GFO/iIDH/MocA family and the biliverdin reductase subfamily. The gene that encodes this cytoplasmic protein maps to chromosome 7p14-cen. BLVRA reduces biliverdin IX ?(the ?methene bridge of the open tetrapyrrole) to bilirubin with the concomitant oxidation of an NADH or NADPH cofactor (bilirubin + NADP+ = biliverdin + NADPH). BLVRA is expressed primarily in liver.

Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) belong to a family of secreted or membrane-associated zinc endopeptidases capable of digesting extracellular matrix components. MMP-12 (macrophage elastase) is involved in smoke-induced emphysema, tumor and other diseases. MMP-12 is secreted as a 54-kDa zymogen and becomes the mature 45-kDa active form after proteolytic cleavage. MMP-12 has a broad range of substrates, including α-1 proteinase inhibitor, α-2 antiplasmin, plasminogen activator inhibitor-2, collagen IV, laminin, fibronectin, elastin, but not interstitial collagens.
The sequence (Accession # NP_002417) corresponding to the catalytic domain (aa 106-267) of Human MMP-12 was expressed in E. coli. The semaphorins are a family of proteins that are involved in signaling. All the family members have a secretion signal, a 500-amino acid sema domain, and 16 conserved cysteine residues(Kolodkin et al., 1993 [PubMed 8269517]). Sequence comparisons have grouped the secreted semaphorins into 3 general classes, all of which also have an immunoglobulin domain. The semaphorin III family, consisting of human semaphorin III (SEMA3A; MIM 603961), chicken collapsin, and mouse semaphorins A, D, and E, all have a basic domain at the C terminus. Chicken collapsin contributes to path finding by axons during development by inhibiting extension of growth cones (Luo et al., 1993 [PubMed 8402908]) through an interaction with a collapsin response mediator protein of relative molecular mass 62K (CRMP62) (Goshima et al., 1995 [PubMed7637782]), a putative homolog of an axonal guidance associated UNC33 gene product (MIM 601168). SEMA3F is a secreted member of the semaphorin III family.
