Description:   Ubiquitin like proteins fall into two classes: the first class, ubiquitin-like modifiers (UBLs) function as modifiers in a manner analogous to that of ubiquitin. Examples of UBLs are SUMO, Rub1 (also called Nedd8), Apg12 and Hub1. Proteins of the second class include Parkin, RAD23 and DSK2, are designated ubiquitin domain proteins (UDPs). These proteins contain domains that are related to ubiquitin but are otherwise unrelated to each other. In contrast to UBLs, UDPs are not proteolytically processed or conjugated to other proteins. Rub1 and the corresponding human homolog NEDD8 are activated by the E1 ubiquitin activating enzyme UBA2, that forms isopeptide linkages between thio esters. NEDD8 shows 80% homology to ubiquitin. The best known targets of Rub1 modification are members of the cullin family. Cullins are subunits of an E3 ubiquitin ligase complex called the Skp1 /Cul1/Cdc53 F box (SCF). The SCF promotes transfer of ubiquitin from a ubiquitin conjugating enzyme (E2) to the target protein. Rub1 modification may regulate SCF function or localization.

Description:   CLEC4M is a transmembrane receptor and is often referred to as L-SIGN because of its expression in the endothelial cells of the lymph nodes and liver. It is involved in the innate immune system and recognizes numerous evolutionarily divergent pathogens ranging from parasites to viruses, with a large impact on public health. The protein is organized into three distinct domains: an N-terminal transmembrane domain, a tandem-repeat neck domain and C-type lectin carbohydrate recognition domain. The extracellular region consisting of the C-type lectin and neck domains has a dual function as a pathogen recognition receptor and a cell adhesion receptor by binding carbohydrate ligands on the surface of microbes and endogenous cells. The neck region is important for homo-oligomerization which allows the receptor to bind multivalent ligands with high avidity. Variations in the number of 23 amino acid repeats in the neck domain of this protein are common and have a significant impact on ligand binding ability. This gene is closely related in terms of both sequence and function to a neighboring gene (GeneID 30835; often referred to as DC-SIGN or CD209). DC-SIGN and L-SIGN differ in their ligand-binding properties and distribution. Alternative splicing results in multiple variants. This gene encodes a type II integral membrane protein that is 77% identical to CD209 antigen, a HIV gp120-binding protein. This protein, like CD209, efficiently binds both intercellular adhesion molecule 3 (ICAM3) and HIV-1 gp120, and enhances HIV-1 infection of T cells. This gene is mapped to 19p13.3, in a cluster with the CD209 and CD23/FCER2 genes. Multiple alternatively spliced transcript variants have been found for this gene, but the biological validity of some variants has not been determined.

Description:   NogoA Antibody: NogoA is a member of a family of integral membrane proteins termed reticulons that are thought to be involved in numerous disorders including neurodegenerative diseases. Reticulon proteins are known to regulate many cellular processes and interact with multiple proteins and receptors such as BACE. NogoA was initially identified as a myelin-associated neurite outgrowth inhibitor. It is highly expressed in oligodendrocytes in the white matter of the CNS; blocking its activity with antibodies or other factors results in improved axon regrowth and functional recovery in experimental CNS lesion models. NogoA has also been suggested to play a role in neurodegenerative diseases such as Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, in which case NogoA is found at elevated levels in postmortem muscular samples, and multiple sclerosis (MS), in which case autoantibodies to NogoA have been found in serum and cerebrospinal fluid in MS patients.

Description:   The RING-type zinc finger motif is present in a number of viral and eukaryotic proteins and is made of a conserved cysteine-rich domain that is able to bind two zinc atoms. Proteins that contain this conserved domain are generally involved in the ubiquitination pathway of protein degradation. RNF17 (ring finger protein 17) or tudor domain-containing protein 4, TDRD4, SPATA23, Mmip-2 or FLJ11045, is a testis-specific protein and and novel key regulator of spermiogenesis containing 1,623 amino acids. By distributing Mad proteins to the cytoplasm, RNF17 regulates the transcriptional activity of c-Myc. Although showing localization in the nucleus, RNF17 is predominantly observed in cytoplasm and is a component of a novel nuage found in male germ cells. The gene encoding RNF17 maps to human chromosome 13q12.12 and encodes one RING-type zinc finger and four tudor domains. As a result of alternative splice events, five RNF17 isoforms exisit.
