SLC25A20 is one of several closely related mitochondrial membrane carrier proteins that shuttle substrates between cytosol and the intramitochondrial matrix space. It mediates the transport of acylcarnitines into the mitochondrial matrix for their oxidation by the mitochondrial fatty acid oxidation pathway. Mutations in this gene are associated with carnitine acylcarnitine translocase deficiency, which can cause a variety of pathological conditions such as hypoglycemia, cardiac arrest, hepatomegaly, hepatic dysfunction and muscle weakness, and is usually lethal in new born and infants.

Superoxide Dismutase (SOD2) belongs to the iron/manganese superoxide dismutase family. SOD2 is a mitochondrial matrix protein that forms a homotetramer and binds one manganese ion per subunit. The mitochondrial oxidation of long-chain fatty acids is nitiated by the sequential action of carnitine palmitoyltransferase I (which is located in the outer membrane and is detergent-labile) and carnitine palmitoyltransferase II (which is located in the inner membrane and is detergent-stable), together with a carnitine-acylcarnitine translocase. CPT I is the key enzyme in the carnitine-dependent transport across the mitochondrial inner membrane and its deficiency results in a decreased rate of fatty acid beta-oxidation.
