Description:
Indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase (IDO) is an IFN-γ inducible gene. It catalyzes the degradation of the essential amino acid L-tryptophan to N-formylkynurenine. IDO has been implicated to protect against intracellular and extracellular pathogens. . IDO1 is also known as Indolamine 2,3-dioxygenase, Indole 2,3-dioxygenase, and Indoleamine-pyrrole 2,3-dioxygenase. IDO is a ubiquitously expressed cytoplasmic protein with a predicted molecular weight of approximately 45 kDa. Indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase (IDO) is one the best known IFN-γ inducible genes. The product of IDO gene catalyzes the degradation of the essential amino acid L-tryptophan to N-formylkynurenine. IDO has been implicated to protect against intracellular and extracellular pathogens. It also has been shown to maintain the special immune suppressive status of immune-privileged sites such as the brain, eyes, kidney, and placenta.

Description:
IL-21 is a cytokine identified in human and mouse that shows significant homology to IL-2, IL-4, and IL-15. The receptor for IL-21 (IL-21R) also termed NILR for novel interleukin receptor) is a member of the class I cytokine receptor family. IL-21R forms a complex with the common cytokine receptor gamma chain, gammac, and mediates IL-21 signaling via the JAK-Stat pathway. IL-21 is expressed in activated T-cells, as well as HL-60 and THP-1 cell lines. IL-21 plays a role in the proliferation and maturation of NK, B- and T-cell populations.

Description:
The chromatin non-histone high mobility group of proteins (HMG)-1 and -2 contain conserved domains known as HMG-boxes. Both HMG-1 and HMG-2 contain an N-terminal HMG box, a central HMG box and an acidic carboxy terminus. HMG-1/2 have been shown to facilitate the binding of various sequence-specific transcription factors to their respective DNA binding sites, such as steroid hormone receptors, and p53.

Description:
Serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT) is a monoamine found in the central nervous system, gastrointestinal tract, and blood with broad physiological functions as a neurotransmitter, in gastric motility, hemostasis, and cardiovascular integrity. Seven subclasses (5-HT 1-7) of serotonin receptors have been identified, a majority of which are members of the seven transmembrane domain-containing G-protein coupled receptor (GPCR) family, and are the target of several anti-depressant drugs. The 5-HT1 subclass consists of five highly homologous receptors that couple via G(i/o) alpha subunits to inhibit adenylyl cyclase activity. The 5-HT1A receptor gene is 99% homologous between human and mouse, and is expressed from an intronless gene with a predicted length of 421 amino acids. 5-HT1A receptor activation is generally inhibitory to cAMP production, but may also stimulate type II adenylyl cyclase activity in a cell-specific manner via release of G(beta/gamma) subunits when coupled to G(i2). 5-HT1A expression in mammals is strongest in CNS limbic pathways that control emotion, including tissue of the hippocampus, dorsal raphé, and septum.

Description:
SOD (Superoxide dismutase) is responsible for the elimination of cytotoxic active oxygen by catalyzing the dismutation of the superoxide radical to oxygen and hydrogen peroxide. There are three SOD isoenzymes in mammalian cells, they are: EC SOD (extracellular SOD), Cu/Zn SOD (copper and zinc-containing SOD) and Mn SOD (manganese-containing SOD).

Description:
Metallothioneins (MTs) are a class of ubiquitous, low molecular weight, cysteine-rich, metal binding proteins that function in the metabolism of zinc and copper. MT protects against exposure to toxic metals such as mercury and cadmium as well as a variety of other stress conditions. There are four mammalian MT isoforms: MT-I, -II, -III, -IV, each of which is encoded by individual genes. MT expression is induced by heavy metal cations, starvation, elevated temperature, lipopolysaccharide, inflammatory cytokines, free radicals, and ionizing radiation.

Description:
Calnexin (CNX), an unglycosylated resident ER transmembrane protein, together with Calreticulin (CRT), plays a key role in glycoprotein folding and its control within the ER, by interacting with folding intermediates via their monoglucosylated glycans. Calnexin associates with newly synthesized monomeric glycoproteins and only recognizes glycoproteins when they are incompletely folded. Furthermore, Calnexin has been demonstrated to function as a molecular chaperone capable of interacting with polypeptide segments of folding glycoproteins.

Description:
The DNA damage checkpoint is a signal transduction pathway that has the ability to delay entry into mitosis. When DNA is damaged, the Check point kinases (CHKs) are known to act downstream of ATM to elicit appropriate responses such as cell cycle arrest. Chk1, for instance, is activated by ATM phosphorylation of serines 123, 178, 278, and 292 of the S phase-promoting cdc25A phosphatase and accelerates IR (ionizing radiation)induced degradation of cdc25A.

Description:
Protein Kinase C (PKC) is a large superfamily of serine/threonine kinases that mediate essential cellular signals required for activation, proliferation, differentiation and survival. There are at least ten PKC isotypes that are closely related in structure but that have distinct patterns of tissue distribution and function. The PKC isotypes can be subdivided into three classes based on primary structure and biochemical properties. These are: classical or conventional PKC isotypes (cPKC), novel PKC isotypes (nPKC) and atypical PKC isotypes (aPKC).

Alpha-crystallins, which are part of the small Heat shock family members, are major water-soluble proteins present in the lens of the mammalian eye. Phosphorylation of serine residues which occurs during development and in response to stress, is intimately linked with its function. Chaperone activity requires, and is modulated by, oligomerization and is limited to binding unfolded intermediates to prevent irreversible aggregation.

FKBP59, also known as Hsp56/p59 is an immunophilin that is a component of Hsp70/Hsp90/steroid receptor complexes. Expression of FKBP59 is increased in response to heat shock and ischemic stress, and is thought to play a role in the folding and cytoplasmic/nuclear distribution of steroid receptors.
