PNPP (p-Nitrophenyl Phosphate, Disodium Sal) is a widely used substrate for detecting alkaline phosphatase in ELISA applications. When alkaline phosphatase and PNPP are reacted, a yellow water-soluble reaction product is formed. This reaction product absorbs light at 405 nm. Pierce PNPP is available in four formats: dry crystalline powder, single-use tablets, a stable substrate solution, and a complete kit containing substrate solution and diethanolamine buffer. Glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH) catalyzes the reversible oxidative phosphorylation of glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate in the presence of inorganic phosphate and nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD), an important energy-yielding step in carbohydrate metabolism. Recent evidence suggests that it also is involved in a number of cellular processes such as membrane fusion, phosphotransferase activity, DNA replication and repair, and nuclear RNA export. Ribavarin is an antiviral compound reported to be active against RSV, HIV, HCV and other infectious agents. Its metabolite, ribavirin 5'-phosphate, inhibits inosine monophosphate dehydrogenase (IMP). It is also an analog of the imidazole nucleotide intermediates in purine nucleotide biosynthesis.
Ribavirin is active against a number of DNA and RNA viruses. It is a member of the nucleoside antimetabolite drugs that interfere with duplication of viral genetic material.
