AARE (Acylamino-acid-releasing enzyme) is also known as Acyl-peptide hydrolase. It catalyzes the hydrolysis of the terminal acetylated amino acid preferentially from small acetylated peptides. The acetyl amino acid formed by this hydrolase is further processed to acetate and a free amino acid by an aminoacylase. It can play an important role in destroying oxidatively damaged proteins in living cells. Deletions of this gene locus corresponding to the protein are found in various types of carcinomas, including small cell lung carcinoma and renal cell carcinoma.

AHNAK is a 5,890 amino acid protein encoded by the human gene AHNAK. The intronless AHNAK gene is located on human chromosome 11q12 and has three main structural regions: the 251 amino acid N-terminus, a large central region of 4390 amino acids with multiple repeated units of about 128 amino acids in length, and the 1002 amino acid C-terminus. The central region seems to have antiparallel beta-strands connected by intervening loops. Several putative regulatory elements are clustered within the C-terminal region, including nuclear export localization signals, a leucine zipper, and potential phosphorylation sites for Akt1 and PKC. AHNAK is believed to be an important signalling molecule involved in a wide range of physiological activities and may be required for neuronal cell differentiation.. AHNAK also appears to influence b-adrenergic regulation of cardiac L-type Ca2+ channel function.

Semaphorins are a family of cell surface and secreted proteins involved in neural development that are conserved from insects to humans. Members of this family are approximately 750 amino acids in length (including signal sequences) and are defined by a conserved extracellular “semaphorin†domain of approximately 500 amino acids containing 14-16 cysteines, blocks of conserved sequences and no obvious repeats. The transmembrane semaphorins are characterized by an additional 80 amino acid transmembrane domain and an 80-110 amino acid cytoplasmic domain. Secreted and cell-bound semaphorins chemically attract and repel the growth of neural axons, guiding the development of intricate networks of neural tissue. SEMA3E is a secreted semaphorin with 775 amino acids. Mutations in the SEMA3E gene are associated with CHARGE syndrome, a disorder characterized by cranial nerve dysfunction, coloboma of the eye, choanal atresia, inner and external ear abnormalities, cardiac anomalies, genitourinary abnormalities, and growth retardation.

HGF is a potent, mesenchymally-derived mitogen for mature parenchymal hepatocytes, and acts as a growth factor for a broad spectrum of tissues and cell types. HGF signals through a transmembrane tyrosine kinase receptor known as MET. Activities of HGF include the induction of cell proliferation, motility, morphogenesis, inhibition of cell growth, and enhancement of neuron survival. HGF is a crucial mitogen for liver regeneration processes, especially after partial hepatectomy and other liver injuries. Human and murine HGF are cross-reactive. Human HGF is expressed as a linear, polypeptide-precursor glycoprotein containing 697 amino acid residues. Proteolytic processing of this precursor generates the biologically active heterodimeric form of HGF, which consists of two polypeptide chains (α-chain and β-chain) held together by a single disulfide bond resulting in formation of a biologically active heterodimer. The α-chain consists of 463 amino acid residues and four kringle domains. The β-chain consists of 234 amino acid residues.
