Description:
The CD35 antigen is composed of four different allotypes having different molecular weights [A (or F) - 160 kDa, B (or S) - 190 kDa, C - 220 kDa, and D - 250 kDa]. It is the receptor for C3b and is found on B cells, a subset of T cells, monocytes, neutrophils, follicular dendritic cells, erythrocytes, and kidney glomelular podocytes. CD35 mediates neutrophil and monocyte phagocytosis of particles coated with C3b and/or C4b. This interaction also enhances phagocytosis mediated by the Fc receptors.

Description:
The CD45 antigen is an essential regulator of leukocyte activation and development and is now known to be a protein tyrosine phosphatase, e.g., CD45 is able to dephosphorylate the Src family of protein kinases. This activity is now known to be required for signal transduction induced by T and B cell antigen receptor engagement, cytokine signaling, and Fc receptor stimulation. The functional state of CD45 also has a pronounced effect on lymphocyte development. CD45 exists in multiple forms, such as the restricted variants (CD45R; see companion products 1660, 1665, 1675, 1685, and 1820) and as allelic forms CD45.1 (Ly-5.1) and CD45.2 (Ly-5.2). The former arises as a result of alternative splicing of different exons. The specificity of antibodies to CD45.1 and CD45.2 has been exploited in studies where resolution of donor and recipient cells is essential, such as in gene therapy or bone marrow transplantation. The monoclonal antibody A20 recognizes all mouse leukocytes expressing the CD45.1 allotype.

Description:
In the chicken the CD8 molecule is present in two forms - (i) a homodimer of two α chains and (ii) a heterodimer of an α chain and a β chain. Chicken CD8 is expressed on approximately 80% of thymocytes, 45% of blood mononuclear cells, and 50% of spleen cells but less than 1% of cells in the bursa and bone marrow. While the vast majority of CD8+ cells in the thymus, spleen, and blood of adult chickens express both CD8α- and CD8β-chains, a relatively large proportion of the CD8+ TCRγδ cells in the spleens of embryos and young chicks express only the α-chain of CD8. Among intestinal epithelial lymphocytes, the major CD8+ T cell populations present in mice are conserved but there is a population of TCRγδ CD8αβ cells in the chicken that is not found in rodents. The monoclonal antibody 3-298 recognizes the CD8α chain of both the chicken and turkey.

Porcine CD1 is a type I transmembrane glycoprotein and a member of the immunoglobulin superfamily of cell surface receptors. It has a domain organization similar to that of MHC class I molecules and is expressed in association with β2-microglobulin. CD1 is found on B cells, macrophages, and immature thymocytes. There is evidence for a role of CD1 in presentation of lipids and peptides to T cells.

The monoclonal antibody BB6-10A10 stains the following percentages of surface immunoglobulin (sIg) positive cells in porcine lymphoid tissues - 11-15% in peripheral blood, 22-23% in mesenteric lymph nodes, 79-87% in ileal Peyer’s patches (ILPP), 6-17 in spleen, and 0% in thymus. While identification of the antigen(s) that are found predominantly on ILPP B cells and which are recognized by BB6-10A10 is speculative, the antibody appears to react with an immature population of B cells in the follicles of ILPPs and with a subpopulation of sIglow B cells in lymph nodes.

CD44, also known as phagocytic glycoprotein-1 (Pgp-1), exists as a large number of different isoforms resulting from alternative RNA splicing. The major isoform expressed on lymphocytes, myeloid cells, and erythrocytes is a glycosylated type I transmembrane protein. Other variable isoforms containing glycosaminoglycans have molecular weights ranging from 110 to 250 kDa and are widely expressed on hematopoietic and non-hematopoietic cells. CD44 contributes to the adhesion of leukocytes to endothelial cells, stromal cells, and the extracellular matrix. It also plays a functional role in cell migration, lymphocyte homing, and adhesion during hematopoiesis and lymphocyte activation.

Description:
Glial fibrillary acid protein (GFAP) is a member of the type III intermediate filament family of proteins. GFAP is heavily expressed in astrocytes and certain other astroglia in the central nervous system, in satellite cells in peripheral ganglia, and in non-myelinating Schwann cells in peripheral nerves. It is closely related to its non-epithelial family members, vimentin, desmin, and peripherin, which are all involved in the structure and functions of the cell’s cytoskeleton. GFAP is thought to help to maintain astrocyte mechanical strength, as well as the shape of cell; however, its precise function remains poorly understood. In adults, GFAP levels increase in response to the proliferation of astrocytes associated with Alzheimer’s disease, epilepsy, and multiple sclerosis. Antibodies specific for GFAP are useful as markers of astrocytic cells and neural stem cells as well as for distinguishing neoplasms of astrocytic origin from other neoplasms in the central nervous system.
